The transfer of Kylian Mbappe from PSG to Real Madrid is becoming more real, and now fans are wondering which shirt number will suit the Frenchman in the Real Madrid team.
The only number that will be up for grabs is Alvaro Odriozola‘s No.19, but more shirts could become available, even though they belong to other players for the time being.
Real Madrid are prepared to deal with Mbappe‘s mega-signing and the number is not a minor detail, especially taking into account the marketing aspect of this transfer.
Mbappe wore No.33 and No.29 at Monaco and No.7 at Paris Saint-Germain, while his shirt with the French national team has No.10 on the back.
With No.7 and No.10 already being already taken by Eden Hazard and Luka Modric and LaLiga not allowing clubs to use numbers above No.25 unless it belongs to an academy player, there are currently three options from which Mbappe can choose: No.19, No.5 and No.23.
Odriozola’s No.19: The right-back will join Fiorentina on loan and his shirt will be available soon. His number was the one Karim Benzema wore for France at Euro 2020.
Jesus Vallejo’s No.5: It may be an unusual number for a forward, but the symbolism of No.5 at Real Madrid is huge. Inheriting the number of former French Galactico Zinedine Zidane is an option that is not ruled out, although for this to happen Vallejo would have to give it the green light.
Ferland Mendy’s No.23: If his compatriot agrees to give him No.23, Mbappe will wear the number worn by NBA legends Michael Jordan and LeBron James, while David Beckham also wore it at Real Madrid
