29 year Old Becomes First Nigerian Legislator In New York

Beroro Efekoro, a 29-year-old Nigerian-born politician has been elected as an Albany County legislator in the state of New York, United States of America. This makes him the first-ever man of Nigerian origin to occupy such a position. Efekoro who gained US citizenship in 2014 relocated to the United States in 2009 alongside his father and siblings. After pursuing a degree in Political Science at a university in Albany, he started a non-profit International Organisation for Education with the aim of helping students thrive in schools. In 2015, he was selected as a committee person by Carolyn Mclaughlin who was at the time Chairwoman of the Albany County Democratic Committee. In November 2019, he contested in the general election and defeated incumbent Albany Democrat, Doug Bullock to emerge as representative of the 7th legislative district which comprises the Beverwyck and Pine Hills neighborhoods in Albany. He began his official role on January 1, 2020. ‘I have been involved in community service for almost all my life. I got elected as my senior class president just one year after I arrived in the U.S. I got involved in the Democratic process even before I became a citizen. I was making calls to Congress and calls to people to support the Affordable Care Act, to go out and vote for President Obama,’ an excited Efekoro stated on his first day in office
